Opportunities...

Document publishing is evolving into a dynamic broadcast
medium.
Shackled to paper, journalism and creative writing have
always suffered the backseat to the broadcasting of sound
and video images on radio and television. Now text and
graphics can be packaged and distributed with an immediacy
never before imagined. The limited creative palette of
digital documents has established the beachhead for the
future invasion of more elaborate interactive publishing
which will grow to include live audio and video.
So many pages, so little time.
Corporations are looking for opportunities to invest in
systems that secure company assets while reducing longterm
expenses. The costs associated with printing, distributing,
filing, and storing paper documents have always been
accepted as unavoidable. No longer - and budget expenses for
new archiving systems are easy to justify (see our comparison
of advantages). The desktop computer has superceded paper
documents as the preferred delivery system. Those documents
that are necessary for the functioning of the organization
are probably already converted to electronic form. However,
there are tremendous opportunities available for major
conversion of paper documents and forms that have not been
digitized yet.
Print Workflow upgrading.
The biggest trend in the printing industry is the
conversion to a Portable Document Format standard for the
streamlining of printing workflows. Service bureaus and
printers that accept the new standard early will see a
tremendous reduction in the time taken to pre-flight files
for output. Artwork modifications and imposition changes can
be performed in the plant. New PDF workflow programs will
make it possible for printers to repurpose files for
multiple print streams "on-the-fly."
High resolution demand will return with a
vengeance.
It is difficult to forecast how fiber optic bandwidth
improvements and High Definition Television (HDTV) will
impact the changing nature of the internet. One thing is
certain - users will want the highest resolution graphics
and the most sophisticated typography possible, the kind
only available through the use of vector graphics designed
by well-trained graphic designers. Much of what has been
"down-purposed" today to squeeze into the 28.8 baud
bandwidth will need to up "up-purposed" to fill high
resolution demand. PDF fills this anticipated need while
solving current challenges to the internet/intranet.
Copyright
Protection: Understanding Your Options
With the vast proliferation of publishing options and the
temptation to repurpose any content into any form without
regard to copyright issues, it is important to take the time
to review the current state of copyright issues. Here is the
"latest" as a Special Report from Seybold Seminars. Included
are technical solutions such as watermarking and active
protection systems. It is a 9-page PDF file.
