CD-ROM...

Networked servers and the web have become the pre-eminent media for the transfer of corporate information but they are by no means the best ones for all applications. Sometimes packaging information onto a CD-ROM is a far superior strategy, particularly if the following are important criteria:

  1. controlled interface and presentation of information
  2. quick distribution of large files to remote users
  3. all-in-one distribution of files, installers, and programs
  4. closed cross-document navigation
  5. use on offline (particularly laptop) computers
  6. high resolution printability on a broad variety of output devices
  7. use on multiple computer platforms (WIN, MAC, and UNIX)
  8. distribution and editing security
  9. use of multimedia
  10. interactive kiosks

Below are some case study CD-ROMs that Performance Graphics has helped develop. Each CD-ROM resulted from a comprehensive evaluation and production process. Each is cross-platform and utilizes PDF files - meaning that its files can be accessed on either Macintosh or Windows computers while meeting the criteria established above.

Employee Campaign
Coordinator's Guide

United Way of Greater Los Angeles

To supplement printed materials needed by their Employee Campaign Coordinators for the 2000 year campaign, United Way of Greater Los Angeles contracted the production of a 30-minute interactive guide that explains how to start, plan, run, and close a successful corporate fundraising campaign. The presentation includes voiceover and background music with entertaining testimonials. PDF documentation was linked to the Macromedia Director presentation. Utilizing the CD-installed version of Acrobat Reader, the cross-platform (WIN & MAC) CD autoruns without installation of any additional software.

Community Support Campaign
2000

Wells Fargo Bank/ Seattle

In support of the their national United Way fundraising efforts, Wells Fargo contracted the production of a campaign materials CD-ROM to distribute the corporate branding, pledge form (as PDF form), and MS Access Pledge Capture Utility to their campaign coordinators. Preceded by a 6-minute introduction and overview in Macromedia Director, user manuals were made available as PDFs for cross-platform distribution, online viewing, or printout. All logos and branding guidelines were clearly documented. The pledge form could be distibuted online or in print. To facilitate autorunning, the CD-installed version of Acrobat Reader was included for both WIN and MAC halves of the hybrid CD.

Interactive Customer Documentation
DocuPrint Printers

Xerox Corporation

To supplement distribution of printed customer documentation, Xerox wanted an Interactive digital equivalent that could be used by customers and their Customer Service representatives alike. The result is a CD-ROM filled with 49 books worth of PDFs that are updated semiannually. The books are cataloged and hyperlinked with complete Table of Contents and indexes for each book. They are cross-document searchable within the free Acrobat Reader. The CD runs equally well in Macintosh, Windows, and UNIX environments with a one-to-oneconsistency and reprintability with the printed version.

Graphic Design Portfolio
Performance Graphics
Los Angeles, CA

Graphic design companies are applying their skills to an ever widening array of media. In addition to an expanded choice of print workflows, many agencies are creating designs for the internet, animation, multimedia, presentations, signage, corporate i.d.'s, etc. The Performance Graphics portfolio uses two formats to provide a look at their designs of the last decade - PDF and Macromedia projector files. PDF documents are compact, scalable, viewable online, and printable cross-platform. Projector files are superior to PDFs at mixing sound with transitioning visuals. The two formats can be interactively linked to each other.

Monthly Board of Directors Meetings
Metropolitan Water District
of Southern California

The Board of Directors for the world's largest water utility meet monthly to review and act on up to 40 different action letters, submitted by district employees and consultants. These letters are converted from Word files into PDFs, linked to a standard PDF interface, and provided on CD-ROMs to the Directors for use on their laptop computers. This production workflow insures consistency with printed versions of the documents as well as signature-level security.

Public Relations Media Kit
Metropolitan Water District
of Southern California

Multimedia CD-ROMs very often have a printed document component that supplements the interactive component. PDFs provide a wonderful capability to make printed documents available for printing and viewing right off of the CD. This is why so many software manufacturers provide Read Me files as PDF documentation files with their installation utilities.

Distributors Documentation Package
Strahan Advertising/
Lamb Weston, Inc.

Advertising agencies are discovering the advantages of providing marketing materials via CD-ROM to their distributors. In this case, the entire advertising campaign of trade ads and educational materials are provided in the PDF format to supplement the multimedia component of the CD.
